After David realized at an early age that he was not going to be astronaut (glasses), his interest in art grew exponentially. At a college lecture, while finishing his BFA at Rochester Institute of Technology, a guest-artist was asked about how one becomes a painter. “Do 500 paintings,” he replied. By this gauge, he is an illustrator many times over, as proven by an overstuffed cellar filled with colorful works of art. David’s studio is jammed with all kinds of stuff, such as paints, brushes, pens, pencils, easels, drawing boards, and digital media. For him, the fun starts in finding just the right combination of paper and paint and a medium to render a solid drawing with a playful pallet that is unique to a story or idea. Often, he will concoct his own paint to achieve that perfect shade, hue or texture needed to breathe life into a subject. Over the course of his career David has found that, either as astronaut or illustrator, you’ve got to have the right stuff.
